The beginning of a movement
All great ideas come from a little spark, one that is so bright or intense that refuses to be ignored.
One summer evening in 2012 while riding our motorcycle we saw the spark! As my wife and I were returning home from our evening ride (wind-therapy session). Dusk was setting in and we were cruising in the Foothills of Central California. Enjoying the smell of the Oaks and Natural Grasses that grow more fragrant as the temperatures dropped. Upon one of the straight stretches among the curvy foothill roads, we could see hazard lights on a vehicle. As we got closer, we could see the vehicle was in the middle of the road. Several vehicles continued to pass the car going in both directions without slowing. We slowed down to assess what was going on and what we saw surprised us both, as two young ladies in their late teens, early twenties dressed very nicely for a night out. I located a safe spot to turn around and offered assistance.
The girls seemed relieved that someone had finally stopped. While one of the young ladies attempted to make contact for further assistance, the other helped by guiding the vehicle so we could push it into a nearby driveway safely out of the middle of the road. We continued our way after we knew they had contacted someone they knew to help them out.
As we were riding home, I could not stop thinking of those young ladies. My wife could tell something was not sitting right with me and when we came to a stop sign, she asked if I was still not feeling right about those two young ladies and their situation. I said no, as I needed to be sure. Upon arriving home, I grabbed my youngest son and his friend to load up the truck with the gas cans. We headed back up and, on the way, I explained to them what we saw and how disappointing it was to see that no one else stopped or even slowed. Once we reached the location, the girls and the vehicle were gone.
Over the course of several weeks, we shared this story with co-workers and friends. With all these different discussions and reflection, it was clear that something had changed in our society. We needed to bring back the times of care and compassion for thy neighbor. The idea was to start a movement of encouraging all to assist others when possible. With all the negativity in this world, let us be the light in this darkness and share positive stories, acts of kindness & be the encouragement this world needs.
That is how R.O.A.D. came to be!
